Buster Cotten began training in Korean Karate/Tae Kwon Do in 1984 at the age of six. In October of 1988, he was promoted to Jr. Black Belt by Dr. David Jordan becoming the second student in the system to receive a black belt at this age. In 1992, Mr. Cotten began teaching Tae Kwon Do at the Jackson Parish Recreation Department in Jonesboro, Louisiana.

1989 USKA World Championships

In 1995, Mr. Cotten established the Jackson Parish Karate School in Jonesboro, Louisiana and served as assistant instructor for the Louisiana Tech Karate Team. In 1996, he was responsible for helping the Louisiana Tech Karate Team cature its 9th National Team Title. It was during this time that Mr. Cotten won the 1996 National Points Campionship in Black Belt Weapons and Kata, and was promoted to 3rd Degree Black Belt in December of 1997.
In 1998, Mr. Cotten won a triple crown and was awarded a National Championship in Black Belt Weapons, Kata and Kumite.
During this time, Mr. Cotten continued to train under Dr. David Jordan and achieved the rank of 1st Degree Black Belt at the age of 15 years. After receiving his adult black belt in December of 1992, he won the Black Belt Men Light Heavy Weight Kumite (fighting) Division at the 1993 USKA World Championships in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was awarded his 2nd Degree Black Belt in June of 1994 and was also inducted into the Atlee Chittim Role of Honor that same year.

As a result of his many achievements, Mr. Cotten was inducted into the United States Karate Alliance Hall of Fame. Following his induction, he has won a number of major grand championship titles including the 1998 PKC Grand National Fighting Grand Championship in Canton, Ohio, the 2000 USKA World Kata Grand Championship in New Orleans, Louisiana , the 1999 USKA Weapons Grand Champion and the 2003 USKA National Fighting Grand Championship in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In 1999, Mr. Cotten was appointed Competition Coach by Dr. David Jordan and was responsible for leading the Louisiana Tech Karate Team to three National Team Titles in 2000, 2002 and 2004. In addition to winning National Team titles, Mr. Cotten was also recognized as the 2000 and 2004 National Instructor of the Year. He currently holds a 6th Degree Black Belt and serves as Competition Coach for the Jordan's Korean Karate Competition Team. In 2008, he was appointed as the USKA Louisiana State Representative as well as Chairman for the Chittim/Jordan Korean Karate Weapons System.
